Somalia PM Shrugs Off Trump's Denigrating Comments on His Nation
Hamza Abdi Barre addressed the controversy during an innovation summit, noting that Trump has disparaged numerous nations and suggesting the optimal response is to "simply move on," a news website reported.
During a Cabinet session, Trump specifically targeted Minnesota, which hosts a substantial Somali American population, declaring: "Somalians ripped off that state for billions of dollars, billions every year, billions of dollars. And they contribute nothing."
He continued: "I don't want them in our country. Their country is no good for a reason. Their country stinks, and we don't want them in our country. I could say that about other countries too … We don't want them."
Trump added: "We could go one way or the other, and we're going to go the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country."
The president has maintained a consistent pattern of attacking immigrant communities since his 2016 campaign, frequently portraying newcomers from certain nations as criminals.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz defended the state's Somali residents, condemning Trump for "demonizing an entire group of people who came here, fleeing civil war, and created a vibrant community that makes Minnesota and this country better."
Ali Omar, Somalia's state minister for foreign affairs, declared Tuesday that targeting Somalia as a "scapegoat or distraction from their own failures" has become "too easy" for political figures.
Omar stated: "This narrative is not only false, it is an insult to our resilience and sacrifice," urging Somalis to "stand united, protect our dignity, and show the world that we are no pawn in anyone."
